I first came to China in 1974 as a language student, and since then I have visited the country regularly. I am particularly interested in rural China, and I have done fieldwork in villages in Shandong, Yunnan, Sichuan and Hubei. I used to work mainly on rural education (see A County of Culture. China’s Twentieth Century Seen from the Village Schools of Zouping, Shandong, University of Michigan Press, 2002), but I am now looking more broadly at social, cultural and political change in rural China. I have been teaching at Århus University since 1978. You can find more about my present project at http://www.ruralchina.au.dk/index.jsp
