I first came to China as a graduate student and since then have visited the country regularly. I am particularly interested in rural China and have done fieldwork on villages in Sichuan and Hubei. I used to work mainly on rural education (and have written A County of Culture.
I first came to China as a graduate student and since then have visited the country regularly. I am particularly interested in rural China and have done fieldwork on villages in Sichuan and Hubei. I used to work mainly on rural education (and have written A County of Culture. China’s Twentieth Century Seen from the Village Schools of Zouping, Shandong, University of Michigan Press, 2002), but I am now looking more broadly at social, cultural and political change in rural China.
