Women and Politics in Asia

It is a paradox that women, who compose half the population, are so poorly represented in policy-making bodies in Asia. Although there have been substantial improvements in recent decades, only a very small number of women rise to positions of political leadership or attain high levels of economic participation.

 

This series addresses such issues as the paucity of women leaders and the marginalization of women in politics; the impact of globalization and political culture on women’s involvement in politics and their representation at various levels of government; the role of political structures in empowering women and shaping gender power relations in politics; the role of women’s organizations; and the tensions between modernity and tradition in women’s roles.

 

The series editor is Kazuki Iwanaga of Halmstad University, Sweden.

    Apparently, the hot travel destinations this year are Uganda and Burma – at least according to Lonely Planet aficionados. If true, then sales of a recent NIAS Press book – listed as recommended reading in the latest edition of the Lonely Planet guide to Myanmar/Burma – might be about to explode (or maybe not, given its subject matter).
