The Indonesian Military After the New Order
by Sukardi Rinakit
![]() |
288 pp., illustrated Studies in Contemporary Asian History # 2 Available from NIAS Press worldwide except Asia-Pacific |
Because the military is an integral part of Indonesia's power structure, it is of interest to anyone studying Indonesian affairs. This volume is the first study to address the role of the military in Indonesia all the way from the struggle for independence through to the start of the new presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The author is a former ghostwriter at the Indonesian Ministries of Home Affairs and Defence. He is privy to the internal dynamics of the military and has personally interviewed such untouchable figures as former President Soeharto. As such, this is an up-to-date, well-informed study providing a useful contribution to the literature, not least with regard to the prospects and ambitions of the younger generation of the military.

Apparently, the hot travel destinations this year are Uganda and Burma – at least according to Lonely Planet aficionados. If true, then sales of a recent NIAS Press book – listed as recommended reading in the latest edition of the Lonely Planet guide to Myanmar/Burma – might be about to explode (or maybe not, given its subject matter).
